What do intuition and green beauty have to do with each other?

Intuition and beauty walk in hand in hand for the woman expressing her divine feminine essence. When we are following our intuition we feel better, and everyone knows when you feel good you look good.

Following this common wise woman sense of feeling good means looking good, and we feel good when we follow the guidance that leads us there then we begin to see deeper into a mystery that is woven by a feminine force that lies within us all (both man and woman).

It is the hand of a divine feminine energy guiding us in our daily lives leading us towards greater joy and beauty, and she speaks in the language of intuition and leads us to our truest expression of ourselves.

How does this translate to beauty?

When we are in our truest expression of ourselves, we are in our truth and there nothing more beautiful than being in your truth. Using our intuition leads to this.

We can use our intuition to make choices that make us feel supported, grounded, and nurtured. We can make choices that help us to regenerate and rejuvenate. Sometimes these choices mark huge changes in our lives which brings us closer to our source and other times the choices may be small changes, but these too lead us closer to ourselves, our truth, our source.

The foundation of knowing, of our intuition is a connection to the divine feminine for it is the feminine force that speaks in an intuitive and receptive language. Our intuition often speaks to us in a way that has no words, it is a feeling, a knowing that comes from within.  Learning to recognize this and to feel this on an empathic level is a big key to being able to then use your intuition.

Intuition is like a river running between the divine feminine and ourselves, whose channel becomes more clear and defined as more water flows through it.

The more you recognize your intuition and follow it the easier it becomes to recognize it and follow it. Like any muscle or habit it grows stronger with use.

As we follow these whispers of intuition we become ever more free in ourselves, okay with what comes and what we may be feeling. We learn to embrace what is and is not. We makes choices that support our wellbeing and the wellbeing of those around us.

All of this brings us closer to our truth (our authenticity) and this is when our beauty really shines.

Calendula Soothing Mask

Don’t be fooled this calendula soothing mask is simple but it is so soothing, cooling, and softening to the skin. Perfect for sensitive skin or skin that is needing a soothing touch after wind, sun, or harsh conditions, like a lot of nose blowing or airplane travel.

Calendula Mask Recipe

1 tbs of dried Calendula flowers

1tbs of whole oats

Water to mix

 

This mix makes enough for several masks. Store what you are not using in a glass jar with a tight fitting lid.

 

1.Grind the calendula and oats together into a fine powder. A coffee grinder (that is dedicated to herbs and not used for coffee) works best for this. Make sure to grind to a very fine powder.

 

2. Take a tablespoon of your powder and mix in about a tablespoon of water to form a paste. You can add more or less water to reach the consistency you want.

 

To Use

Masks can be messy. Tie your hair back and spread the paste evenly over your skin. Leave the mask on for 10 to 20 minutes.

 

While your mask is on, sit back and close your eyes. Take a moment to be in the moment with these herbs that are nurturing and healing your skin.

 

When you are ready rinse clean and follow with your moisturizer.

 

Optional;

 

Using water as the liquid to mix the paste makes for a very cooling effect on the skin, but if you want you can substitute the water with Avocado Oil for a cooling yet more moisturizing effect.

After Sun Oil Recipe

 

It’s summer!! That means sun kissed skin and maybe even sun burned skin, dry skin, and over heated skin.  This after sun oil recipe is soothing and hydrating to skin that has had too much exposure to summer weather. The herbs used in the oil are cooling and healing to the tissues of the skin and are often used in recipes for treating burns. The essential oils in the recipe are also known for their tissue repairing effects after the damage of too much heat and sun.

This oil is not for severe sunburns, severe sunburns need to be treated carefully. If you have a severe and painful sunburn you need to cool it down with cool water baths for the first 4-6 hours after the burn. And drink lots of water to avoid dehydration. Applying aloe to the burn may also help in between the cool water baths.

This After Sun Summer Oil recipe is for mild sunburns, dry skin, wind chapped skin, skin that has had too summer weather exposure or when a severe burn no longer hurts and is in the healing stage.

It can help to repair and restore skin to its natural balance.

I slather it on myself during the summer even when I do not have a sunburn because my skin loves to drink up the herbal infused oils that help it to hydrate, cool, and repair.

 The Healing Herbs in the Mix

Calendula-These happy little flowers are well known for there skin healing abilities from bruises to burns. They are considered cooling in the Aryuvedic tradition, which is exactly what sunburned skin needs.

Lavender-Another herb well known for it’s benefit in skincare, lavender can help soothe weather beaten skin with its analgesic properties and helps repair the skin after exposure to heat and sun.

Chamomile-An anti-inflammatory known for its healing affinity towards the skin offers its ability to cool and soothe.

The Nurturing Oils

Sunflower Oil-Many of the carrier oils could be used but sunflower and apricot are two oils that always work. Sunflower is high in Vitamin E, making it great for the skin and apricot oil is also known to be high in anti inflammatories (helps cool the skin) and contains anti oxidants to fight against free radical damage. Another great oil is Jojoba Oil.

The Essential Oils

Lavender Essential Oil-Known for its ability to soothe and heal skin that has been burned.

Carrot Seed Essential Oil-Is used for its ability to repair sun damaged skin and possibly in helping to reverse precancerous skin cells.

Geranium Essential Oil-Is used for its soothing and healing affinity for the skin.

There many choices of essential oils that would be good in this mix, like like frankincense, peppermint, or spearmint, so get creative!

After Sun Oil Recipe

4oz Sunflower or Apricot Oil

2tbs Lavender

2tbs Calendula

2tbs Chamomile

A couple drops Lavender EO, Geranium EO, and Carrot Seed EO

A Mini Croc Pot or double broiler

Cheesecloth

To Make:

1. Combine your carrier oil and dried herbs into your croc pot or double broiler and set on low for at least 40min. I do a couple hours on a low setting. Make sure to keep your oil on the lowest setting. If you see any bubbles, its too hot.

2. After a couple hours, turn off heat, and allow the oil/herb mix to cool. Then strain through your cheesecloth into a glass measuring cup.

3. Add a few drops of your essential oils.

4. Pour into a massage or lotion pump bottle or glass bottle of your choosing.

You now have a wonderful After Sun Oil infused with healing herbs for mild sunburns or summer exposed skin.

*Please note this is not a remedy for severe sunburns. Please take the necessary steps to treat severely sunburned skin, and take precaution not to let this happen!

I keep a bottle around during the summer, we use it on sunburns, dry skin, rough feet, cheeks that have too much wind, or for generally thirsty skin. I love knowing that as I use it my skin is drinking up nutrients, vitamins, and minerals that help it rejuvenate, repair and maintain health. I also love being able to give my friends and family something when they show up a little too kissed by the sun.

Winter’s Essence Essential Oil Spray

We are half way through winter, which for some of us can be the hardest part. We started out strong. We started out loving our big comfy sweaters and hot chocolate, but now our longings have turned to flips flops and sunshine. Our internal sunshine is running low and our endurance and tolerance for the fickleness of coldness is running thin. Sure not everyone is like this, but those of you that are know what I am talking about.

This essential oil spray is for you. And for those of you whose endurance is still running high for cold air and slippery things I commend you but think you will still enjoy this winter essence spray.

This is an uplifting spray for the winter blues with essential oils that bring a combination of joy, warmth, and invigoration.

-Wild Orange is an essential used for it’s joyful effect on the emotions, it inspires happy sunny thoughts and feelings.

-Petitgrain is an essential oil derived from the small unripe oranges before they grow into maturity. It too is used for its happy factor.

-The Chamomile essential oil brings an earthy calming factor to the spray while encouraging feelings of happiness. It is a plant known for its ability to lift feelings of depression while giving one the lightness they need to keep going. It supplies an energy needed to endure and maintain a positive outlook at the same time.

-Cinnamon is included for its warming effect both on the body and the mind. I love cinnamon! It is amazing at increasing warmth in the body and comfort in the mind. Perfect for winter blends.

Mixed all together the essentials combine to offer warmth, happiness and an endurance that can be needed to keep on going through the darker, colder winter months.

It’s like sunshine in a bottle.

Winter Essence Recipe

1oz Witch Hazel
5 drops Wild Orange Essential Oil
3 drops Petitgrain Essential Oil
2 drops Chamomile (German or Roman) Essential Oil
2 drops Cinnamon Essential Oil

Combine all ingredients in a 1oz spray bottle.

Tip: It is a good idea to always clearly label your bottles with ingredients and the date. It saves a lot of confusion when you have a lot of bottles, can’t remember what you put in it, misplace it and find it months later, or for others that may pick up your homemade herbal products.

One of the best parts of making your own products is that you can tailor it to be exactly how you like it. Maybe you want to cut down on the Petitgrain and add more Chamomile. Experiment and have fun or buy it here.

Green Beauty, An Ancient SkinCare Tradition

The Green Beauty Movement

Green beauty has its roots deep in the ancient wisdom of herbal lore and its blossoms in the light of modern day plant science.

This movement in the beauty and skincare industry towards herbs, plants, living foods, and natural ingredients is the movement away from chemicals and towards the green world of plants. And although the “green beauty movement” is fairly new (in the past twenty years or so), green beauty itself is an old practice spanning the centuries of herbalism.

There is ancient wisdom in using the plants that grow in the forests and fields for healing. This wisdom has been used for thousands of years by our ancestors for both health, beauty, and skincare.

Using herbs and plants in the products we put on our skin is more than just healthy and good for the environment. It is a connection with the earth. It is healing our skin as we move through the sun, the wind, the rain, and the snow and is supporting our skin as we live, laugh, and cry. But it also feeds the spirit, the part of us that longs for and knows that we belong to something greater than just ourselves. When we use plants for beautification we are putting ourselves in sync with the earth on which we live and our skin, our largest organ, is drinking up all the life force that went into growing those plants. The result is a greater connection to Nature, to Spirit, to the Universe, to Life.

Using the green world for beauty is something women all over the world do and have done. Our grandmothers did it. Our ancestors before them did it. For generations upon generations wise women and men have been using the living world of plants around them for beauty. There was and is no need for harsh or potentially toxic chemicals and there was no need to call it organic skincare, because it simply was, by nature organic.

Green beauty or organic skincare is a way of living, of using the plants and foods from the earth on which we live for healing and for connection to the earth on which we live. It is choosing not to use chemicals, petrochemicals, gmo’s, artificial fragrances, and ingredients engineered by man. It is also choosing to use ingredients that were harvested sustainably, in fair trade conditions, and using containers that are recyclable or reusable.

It is a return to the old ways of health and beauty, when things were natural and organic by nature.

Peppermint Bark Sugar Scrub Recipe

This peppermint bark sugar scrub recipe is going to become your favorite winter holiday salvation, it has the deep, rich smell of chocolate, the uplifting smell of peppermint and leaves your skin super soft after a using in a warm shower.

Cocoa powder not only tastes great and makes wonderful food, the all necessary dark chocolate but its also packed with anti-oxidants which are good for your insides and for your skin. The cocoa powder adds an element of nutrients for your skin to this  sugar scrub. It acts like a full body mask if you let it soak in for a few moments in the shower after exfoliating with it.

Although any cocoa powder would work for this sugar scrub, supporting a fair trade chocolate company would be great. The chocolate industry has a history of using child slave labor. Whole Foods and health food stores will carry a certified fair trade cocoa powder, just look for the certification on the label.

This recipe also contains the CO2 extract of Cocoa, which is like the essential oil of the cocoa plant. It adds a deep grounding scent to this recipe. If you want to leave out the Cocoa extract you can do so, but it does take the peppermint bark scrub to the next level of awesome-ness as far as scent is concerned.

This sugar scrub also contains peppermint essential oil. Peppermint is known to be uplifting to the spirits and good for mental clarity.  It is also great for digestion and has been known to help curb the appetite and cravings. So instead of grabbing another holiday cookie go jump in the shower with your peppermint bark sugar scrub, it will feed your soul and your senses, leave you feeling refreshed, and leave you skin soft and nourished, you’ll be glowing brighter than all those holiday lights.

Peppermint Bark Scrub

***this recipe makes about 4oz

1tbs Cocoa Powder

1/4 cup Cane Sugar

1/4 cup + 1tbs Sunflower Oil (or other non-smelling cold pressed organic oil)

1/4 cup Sea Salt (fine sea salt is better than coarse for this recipe)

3 drops Peppermint EO

2 drops Cocoa CO2 Extract

When I Tell You I am Sensitive

This is one woman’s take on what it is like to be empathic. I am sure others will have different opinions, this is just mine.

When I tell you I am sensitive (or empathic) I do not mean I cannot handle your snarky comments or sarcastic humor or off color comments or your cussing. I don’t mean that you will offend me or that my feelings will be hurt. I don’t mean that I am fragile or to be easily broken. In contrast my sensitivity has given me the perspective to not take things personally, because much of what I feel is not others directing stuff at me, it is just stuff; charged electrical emotional stuff.

It is like water that is on fire with the heat of emotion that has to flow somewhere and empaths being the sponges that they are, soak it right up. Or at least I do.

When I say I am sensitive I am mean that my ability to feel things is super heightened, like having sensitive hearing, or eyes that are sensitive to bright light, or skin that burns easily in the sun. Only I haven’t found sunscreen or sunglasses for my “feelers”.

Being sensitive is like having a super sense, one that is really really hard to shut off.

I can feel the soul of the world in my  bones, and sometimes it hurts, sometimes it aches, sometimes its beautiful, so beautiful it hurts. I feel the grand potential of everyone I meet and I feel the craters of your pain, the emptiness of your perceived loneliness, I feel how ugly you think you are, how sad, how worried, how frazzled. I feel the good too. I feel your coffee buzz, your excitement, your extreme happiness, your hope, your anticipation of jobs and dreams yet to come, I feel you in your power, I feel you feeling beautiful.

And it’s exhausting. And it’s not your fault. And I wouldn’t change it.

It can be downright crushing to have to feel so damn much. I feel all my own shit, the stuff that I cannot shake in a day, whatever worry is trying to take root in my mind or whatever excitement I am currently obsessing over. And I also feel all yours.

Without you having to say a word I will feel in my body as a very real sensation or emotion the emotions that are at the forefront of your being and any stronger ones laying under the surface.

Some empaths will say, “I take all your stuff, I absorb it, I take it on, I take it and feel it”. But I can’t say I take it because that would mean I am volunteering to receive something.

I can’t seem to stop it. It’s like trying not to breathe. Sometimes when I am around others my brain even seems to stop working, I am asked questions that I cannot answer because my circuits are being blown by a torrent of emotion coming from outside of me. It can be downright overwhelming.

But I wouldn’t trade it. I don’t think any empath would.

Its a wonder to be able to feel another’s person’s soul so closely, so vividly. Its a gift to be able to know another’s pains and joys. Its a comfort to be able to feel the emotion lying under the words and act accordingly.

But when we retreat, and we often do, its because one human nervous system can only receive, handle, process, and release so many electrical impulses, so many emotions, whether they are “good” or “bad” in one day.

So if you know or love an empath, let them have their have their space, in fact encourage them to take it, and don’t resent for them taking it, because they will feel that too. One of the best things an empath can do is find the people that can give her what she needs, which can be space, or the ability to bow out of plans, or to be in touch when she is ready to hang again.

For example on Monday you make plans with me for Friday night, but I never know if by Friday night the rest of the week will have been way too much, by Friday I may be at maximum feeling capacity, I may need to bail, and having people that understand this means the world to me. Like the WORLD.

So when I say I am sensitive I am really saying: When I hang out with you I am going to feel all the nuances, ups, downs, highs, and lows of your being and mine at this moment and at some point I will have to go wring out my empathic sponge of a self.

And that’s ok. I wouldn’t change being able to feel so much, but I will retreat into a place that is easy to be, like my bedroom or nature. A place where I do not have to be a radar dish for everything else in the world.

It took me so long to realize this. I wanted to pass it on in case you are an empath or know one.

 

Plant Spirit Allies

All medicinal plants have physical herbal properties but they also have plant spirit qualities, all plants whether herbs or not have plant spirits. Plant spirit is the essence that the plant carries with it, it is the medicine that the plant offers to us in terms of emotional, mental, and spiritual health. Think of it somewhat like a plant’s personality.

It is the plant’s spirit medicine that gives gardens their charm and cut flowers their appeal. Ever wonder why we bring the sick, or the suffering, or a lover, or a friend in need flowers? It is the plant’s spirit that brings the medicine of the flowers to the human spirit. Often we don’t even consider the healing the flower is offering to our human friend.  If we listened we would hear or feel what is being offered.

Plants are alive. Meditate on that for a moment. ALIVE.

They sense things and they know things. And if you approach them in the right way you can hear what they have to say, what they know, the mysteries and knowledge that they hold in their roots and leaves. They will tell you their secrets and help you on the path of life if you have the heart to listen. Think of all the wisdom they must contain, eons of time sitting under the stars in communion with the trees and mountains around them. They are alive with consciousness.

The spirit of the plant is what vibrational medicine therapies like flower essences and homeopathy are based on, but plant spirit medicine itself is ancient, plant whisperers have roamed the earth since the dawn of time. These are people that can hear the medicine of the plant and know how it is offering itself to help.

Plant spirits are the thing that causes a rose to make you feel differently than a sunflower, and a sunflower differently than a daisy.

On the path of our healing evolution we have been moving towards these subtle forms of therapy as we become more highly attuned to the subtler energies around us and more capable of recognizing and using them. This is the ability to use energy for healing, energy such as Reiki, color therapy, sound therapy, and crystal healings.

Vibrational plant therapy is part of this. The plants can be called upon for their vibrational essence in many situations with out actually having to have the plant itself present. We can call the spirit of the plant, like we would call on a friend or an angel, and ask for its healing, protection, guidance, for its spirit medicine for any situation we find ourselves in.

My Path from Herbs to Green Beauty

I have always been some what of wild woman, in the sense that I love being in nature, getting dirty in the garden, I feel better when I am barefoot, and dancing free comes easily for me but finding my way to green beauty was a bit more elusive. I have had to come around to the idea of honoring that part of my wild woman that has to do with beauty and nurturing.

It was a combination of things that kept me from honoring my own beauty. Partly I think I did not feel beautiful. Partly I felt like physical adornment was an ego trap. Really the ego trap was me feeling like I was too holy spiritual to get caught in something like caring for this transient physical body. I was still acting out of my ego until I saw the irony it my ways and then I began to care and honor this vessel even though I knew it would one day be gone.

But still I resisted much of the modern day beauty world, because I knew they were chock full of chemicals and toxins.

I did not really want to be part of the green beauty movement until I worked in holistic spa as a massage therapist.

In the spa I met these wonderful naturally oriented estheticians. They were earthy and natural and beautiful. And women would come to see them for this essence of beauty that they carried with them, and these women would leave glowing. It was here for the first time that I was bitten by the natural green beauty bug, which lead me to getting my eyelashes tinted with a natural dye, and I felt glorious. It was in that glory that everything shifted.

I understood that to adorn my body, my face, my skin, did not mean I was hiding from the world or pretending to be something I was not. In a sense it meant the opposite. It meant that I was ready to be seen. It meant I was grateful for this physical body, and that I was putting that appreciation into action by nurturing my skin and adding to its natural beauty with clean and natural beauty products.

I was honoring myself and my beauty, in my own natural way…..

This is probably something a lot women figure out early on but I needed to understand the spiritual foundation behind it first.  I also needed to find some beauty products that I felt comfortable using, something that was alive, something that was like food for the skin, not chemicals for the skin.

Herbs!! Plants!! Botanicals!!

I had been trained as an herbalist and had been using herbs for healing and this rich world of herbs is the foundation of green beauty. I fell in love with plant science all over again. I saw herbs and botanicals in a whole new way. They could be used for beauty, for healing the skin, for nurturing the skin with vitamins, minerals, and herbal properties.

I had fallen in love with plant science all over again.

And this is the journey of ancient herbal wisdom blended with plant science by women who are connected and in tune or intuitive.

 

Running Wild and Beauty Rituals

Running wild outside and following with a beauty ritual tickles that part of us that is both wild child and divine goddess.

It is an epically awesome combination, it is the essence of being a wild women, the balance of being free, rugged, dirty, and downright wild followed by the nurturing of rich healing oils and flower petals.

It leaves you feeling like a divine creature of earth. Which you are. Your body was meant to used, but it was also meant to be loved. I love to get wild outside and then get pampered inside. In that order. There is nothing better than letting your wild child self run free followed by nurturing the body with a beauty ritual.

 

Beauty rituals are grounding. They are powerful moments rooted in time to honor the temple we live in.

 

There is comfort in nurturing yourself, your skin, and your body. It grounds us back into the present moment. When we stop and take time to nurture ourselves it brings our awareness back into our bodies.  Being in nature has the same nurturing and grounding effect. As we move through nature, it too grounds us back into our bodies, back into the present moment, it washes our perspective clean and brings us back to center.

 

The ritual of beauty is something that is cultivated. It is like any act, we can either quickly wash ourselves and slather on some body lotion and consider ourselves clean. Or we can take a pause, a breath, and be in the moment.

 

It doesn’t have to be a shower or a bath to be considered a beauty ritual. It can be any moment you take to give your body, mind, and spirit a much needed breath. It can be long or short. It can involve your whole body or only part of it. It can involve rich smelling luxurious beauty products or maybe it is just some clean pure water, but what it always involves is attention, gratitude, and breath.

 

Whatever it is you do after you have been outside running free, whether it is a shower, a foot soak, a simple mask, or splashing water on your face followed by moisturizer do this;

Simply doing these three things takes your mind to a single focus and puts you in the meditative space of a beauty ritual. Taking a moment to create a beauty ritual for the skin is a way of saying thank you, of having gratitude for this amazing organ, it is a way of taking a moment to appreciate something miraculous about the human the body while at the same time taking a breath for the spirit. It satisfies that part of our wild women selves that wants to feel gloriously nurtured after being in our natural element.
